Opening Keynote:

Dealing with Sea Level Rise and Climate Change Adaptation in the Californias

Serge Dedina, Ph.D.

Executive Director, Wild Coast & Mayor of Imperial Beach

Session Description: Adapting to rising seas is arguably the greatest challenge faced by coastal cities and communities. Serge Dedina will provide an overview of tools and strategies he and his WILDCOAST team are implementing in Mexico to preserve large swaths of coastline to help adapt to sea level rise, protect against storm surge and conserve coastal ecosystems that sequester carbon. In Imperial Beach, the city has embarked on a comprehensive planning process to identify the physical impacts and economic costs of rising seas as well incorporate sea level rise into the Local Coastal Plan. Serge will also discuss the city’s lawsuit against 35 of the world’s largest fossil fuel companies for the damages associated with sea level rise.
